ECKHART TOLLE makes an Oprah joke (Outside of school)

Eckhart Tolle had some fun with Oprah, but he didn’t do it during their Monday night “class” about “awakening.” Tolle made the joke at a live talk he gave the other weekend, while Oprah was thousands of miles away doing whatever the billionaire chairwoman of Harpo, Inc. does to grow her media group.

Saturday Night Live, from Marin County, CA . . . It’s ECKHART TOLLE!

The German-born mystic, Eckhart Tolle, should host Saturday Night Live. He is already a rock-star of enlightenment

BY PAUL KAIHLA — You’d think that U2 was playing San Rafael, CA on the second Saturday of March 2008. There were traffic jams for miles. There were state, local police and private security managing crowds and cars. There were scalpers in front of the sold-out Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium selling TicketMaster e-tickets for more than $100.

Amazing that a turnout typically reserved for rock-gods was actually for a pudgy, middle-aged man who sat solo on stage — and without any musical accompaniment, special effects or AV — held a rapt audience in a semi-trance state for almost three hours relying on nothing more than the power of his personal presence. Eckhart Tolle’s popularity . . .

Comedian Sarah Silverman’s seasonal mission: De-Christianizing Christmas

Viral video from the Sarah Silverman Show on Comedy Central: “Give the Jew girl toys”

Gen-X comedienne Sarah Silverman leads the charge to divorce an increasingly commercial holiday even further from its roots with her, um, touching song, Give the Jew Girl Toys.

She sings a seminal line to Santa: “What does Jesus have to with you? You’ve got about as much to do with Jesus as Scooby-Doo.”

Paris Hilton grants The Power of Now a second life

SOUL’S CODE — Here we were about to do a post about Paris Hilton and the psychological phenomenon called “object constancy” — you know, Tinkerbell, her addictions, her revolving door of lovers — and she throws us this perfectly spiritual curveball.

During her comings and goings to prison, paparazzi have photographed Paris several times conspicuously carrying the Holy Bible and — wait for it — Eckhart Tolle’s cross-over spiritual self-help hit, The Power of Now. This week Hilton told Barbara Walters on ABC’s The View that she’s reading the books to cope with depression and doing time, adding that she has experienced an epiphany about the superficiality of the life she’s led.

Well, let’s offer a prayer to Paris to hold that new awareness.

Meanwhile, the endorsement momentarily boosted The Power of Now’s sales ranking on Amazon from 5,000-and-something back into the top 200.

Bill Moyers meets Martin Amis and Margaret Atwood

Bill Moyers meets Martin Amis and Margaret Atwood

Since we like television that makes you think, it’s hard to beat PBS’ Bill Moyers. He sat down last year with a series of spiritually-fueled fiction greats to talk about faith and reason. Worth the price of admission, you can get it online.

Moyers revealed an amazing synchronicity that came about when he was trying to line up his subjects for filming:

I had been thinking of a series like this for some time and weighing who should be part of it. Faith is such a smorgasbord that everyone’s taste is different. I didn’t feel comfortable trying to pick the “representative” Christian, Jew, Protestant, Catholic, Muslim

Vacation Time is Good

Vacation Time is Good

It’s good to take vacations. They break patterns, and allow you to pull yourself out of pain cycles, and refocus you on savoring every moment.

Nobody knows that better than all-star Danish business man Morten Lund, the venture capitalist behind Skype. He spent two weeks on the Spanish Island of Ibiza taking in sun and playing with his children. Seems as though he got a new sense of purpose, perhaps even an epiphany about his own energy anatomy. He writes on his blog:

“And to the really weird part – I think Im starting to open myself to more alternative thinking – and the whole idea of not only believing in PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE – might have a dimension of ENERGY to it

Psychologist Robert Hare Immortalized on The Sopranos

Psychologist Robert Hare Immortalized on The Sopranos

Are some actors a bit too convincingly psychopathic? Maybe they’ve studied with Robert Hare

Congratulations to Soul’s Code friend Robert Hare, whose work on psychopathy was highlighted in the penultimate episode of The Sopranos. It aired on Sunday, June 3,  and won the love of reviewers because its tightly-wound narrative resembled Act III of a Godfather movie.

The high point for us was not the shootout in the parking lot of the Bada Bing, witnessed by topless strippers. It was a dinner table conversation where Tony Soprano’s psychiatrist, Jennifer Melfi (the character standing in the top right of the image above), discusses studies into psychopathy with other psychs. Hare’s work is debated, and it becomes a catalyst for Melfi firing Tony as a patient in a later scene. The dramatic turn helps the series wind down in two ways: it exits a major character, and enables the audience to decathect from Tony by explicitly framing him as a clinical sociopath/psychopath.

At the dinner table, one of the doctors exclaims to Melfi: “Robert Hare suggested that sociopaths actually quite glibly engage on key issues like ‘mother,’ ‘family’ . . . .”

Hare’s book, Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us, delves into white-collar sociopaths as well as the criminal kind.

Britney’s saviors? Kevin Federline, her Mom, and her lawyer

Britney’s saviors? Kevin Federline, her Mom, and her lawyer

fantastic | Originally uploaded by nedward.org.

We love surprises. And nothing reveals them better than the spiritual journey we all go through when we struggle with something painful. Rehab, therefore, is definitely up there among the great journeys one can take in life.

So it’s wonderful to hear, if true, that Britney’s lawyer, her stage-parent mother, and gold-digger-soon-to-be-ex-husband Kevin Federline may have stepped up to help struggling pop star Britney Spears along.

Of course a Big Gulp dose of skepticism is needed here. Lawyers and mothers are master manipulators. Federline, of course, belongs in the hall of fame. He’s already positioned himself masterfully for his upcoming custody fight with Spears (with a big assist from Spears of course). No doubt one or more of them have publicists in the game. Their motives are not entirely pure.

But as with much gossip, there’s could be a kernel of truth in there somewhere…

James Cameron’s anti-Christian documentary

James Cameron’s anti-Christian documentary

James Cameron and the Virgin Sacrifice | Originally uploaded by Jinxiecat.

James Cameron (in Perez Hilton-style photo, left) goes on record that the tomb of Jesus, the tomb of Mary was a myth — and that Jesus is dead and buried!

Or was buried, until he was dug up in a tomb in a suburb of Jerusalem.

Considering that Jesus and Mary are about as common a name at that time in the antique world as Bob and Betsy are in present-day North America odds are that Titanic-director James Cameron could be in way, way more over his head than he thinks. TIME magazine: “Tales from the Crypt”
