When the temperature grows colder, these simple DIY treatments can warm you, body and soul.

BY ALEX ANZALONE – The retreat to a warmer, safer place in winter is more than a physical phenomenon. When it’s cold out, not only our bodies but our energy and attention start to head inward.

Part of staying balanced involves being aware of this shift and adjusting our habits to reflect it. Because we are all inseparable from the rhythms of nature, life is easier when we go with the flow rather than work against it. Self-care, stress reduction, nutrition and touch are all essential to staying balanced, healthy, and happy.

I call the following my Five Hot Winter Health Tips because they warm both the body and the soul. Try whichever ones you like to coax your energy out of hibernation:

Hot Towel Scrub

Fill your sink with hot water (I like to add a drop or two of essential oil, such as lavender or eucalyptus). Soak a medium washcloth in the hot water, wring it out, and while the towel is still hot and steamy, begin to scrub the skin gently until it becomes slightly pink or until each part becomes warm. Do one section of the body at a time. Reheat the towel often by dipping it in the hot water.

How often: Daily, morning and evening, for two to 20 minutes, depending on how much time you have.

The hot towel scrub calms the mind, relieves stress and muscle tension. It has the dual effect of re-energizing in the morning and deeply relaxing at night. Health-wise it allows excess fat, cellulite, mucus and toxins to discharge. It also it activates the lymphatic system, especially when scrubbing underarms and groin. On a spiritual level, this type of ritual helps us connect with our bodies and spreads energy through the chakras. By adding candlelight you can make this a sacred moment in your day.

Partner Massage

Touch is a form of nourishment. It is a very healing and natural part of connecting with ourselves and with others. Offer to massage someone close to you and ask that they massage you too. It can be platonic, sensual, or sexual… whatever feels comfortable. Just go with the flow, no experience required.

Light candles and play soothing music to get you into the rhythm. Heat up some massage oil by filling a sink with hot water and letting the massage oil bottle sit in it for five minutes. Before you begin, ask your partner or friend if they have any special requests or areas of tightness that need attention. Check in with them during the massage to ask how you’re doing and whether the pressure is good.

Seated Mini-Massage

This mini massage rocks. For the five minutes that it takes, the benefits are huge. Take turns. When I do this with friends, it leaves us feeling totally relaxed, loved and pampered! Have your partner or friend sit upright in a chair, and for two to five minutes (whatever you have time for), massage their shoulders and neck, give their arms a gentle squeeze, karate chop their back, and conclude by gently rubbing their back to even out the energy.

Massage relieves stress and tension, enhances immunity by increasing lymph flow, and releases chemicals in your body that promote healing and happiness. Besides simply feeling great, giving or receiving a massage is emotionally healing. It also deepens the connection between you and your friend or partner.

Hot Tea or Soup

Since fall brings cold and dry elements, we want to keep our core warm by having warmer drinks and foods to balance and nourish these effects. Hot fluids help stave off flu and colds and keep our digestion working properly. Or your next trip to the grocery store, stock up on soothing tea (such as ginger, mint, chamomile, green, chai) and soup (my faves are butternut squash, lentil and chicken).

Hearty Root Vegetables

Eating with the seasons maintains our connection with earth’s cycles and keeps us in balance. Plus, foods that are in season and locally grown have the most flavor and nutritional value, and are most affordable. Root vegetables are delicious and often overlooked. They have a grounding, relaxing effect on the body, and are nutritionally very rich.

Examples: carrots, burdock, sweet potato, yam, parsnip, rutabaga, daikon, and beet.

Time Out

Take time to slow down by doing a five-minute meditation when you wake up and before you go to sleep, or by taking a walk in nature. It doesn’t take much time to receive the benefits of these simple practices.

Meditation: Find a quiet and relaxing place. Light a candle. Put on some relaxing music. Sit upright with your legs crossed or in a chair with your feet on the ground (whatever is most comfortable). Breathe in and out deeply and slowly, focusing on your breath. When you see your mind drifting (which you will), bring it back to the breath. Notice how the air that enters is cool and the air you breathe out is warm, and notice the path of the air as it moves in and out of your lungs.

Walking: Try to be as present as possible. Make a point of noticing the trees, the snow (if you have it), cute little squirrels scurrying by, or whatever is going on in nature around you. Make sure to breathe, feel the air in your lungs, and enjoy this time you have to yourself.

Why rely on the administration of drugs — or the Obama administration — to cure diseases if you can avoid getting sick in the first place? The worst culprits, including heart disease and many forms of cancer, are preventable with some basic self-care.

BY VAISHALI — The largest generation in history, the post-WWII Baby Boomers (76 million people in the U.S., alone), are entering their peak need for care. And those of us affected by a U.S. health-care reform led by President Obama may end up (or not) at the government’s mercy to nurse what ails us. In the name of self-preservation, here are six highly-effective, do-it-yourself tips to keep the doctor away, and aging at bay.

Six ways to enhance your health and vitality

1. Cut out the junk. Food is your first wave of medicine. Your diet does affect the clarity of your thoughts in the same way that it affects your body’s overall well-being. Refined white sugar, white flour, saturated and trans fats are not foods that will protect your brain or memory or any other part of the body for that matter. These health-sabotaging foods will also decrease overall mental focus and create a sense of physical agitation or downright moodiness. If you want to improve your mood and keep your mind primed, cut out the junk food. A calm mind is a focused mind.

2. Do not deprive yourself of sleep and rest. A tired or fatigued brain is a brain that is neither regenerating nor restoring its energy. When you miss getting adequate rest your performance level suffers and moodiness sets in. The longer the deprivation, the greater and more rapid the mental decay. Studies indicate that when people have been sleep deprived for too long they begin to hallucinate and display signs of madness. The good news is that with quality uninterrupted re-cooperative sleep, the fatigue goes away rather quickly and you return to your right mind.

3. Eat brain-boosting foods. The best foods for the brain are also great for the nervous system, immune system and skin. Brain friendly foods include wild caught salmon, blueberries, leafy green vegetables, avocados, and sprouted nuts. If you do not have the cleanest of diets, know that cacao beans are high on the list of brain friendly foods. Look for dark chocolate made with 70% or more cacao and, of course, organic is the best choice for any foods you consume.

4. Try a Cold Laser Treatment. This boosts the lymphatic system, supports drainage and keeps the fluid moving. Cold laser sessions are completely painless and oftentimes yield immediate results. They are a safe treatment option for the very old or very young or those already weakened by drugs or chronic illness. Acupuncturists, chiropractors and other alternative health practitioners may offer cold laser treatments in conjunction with their ongoing health care packages. Or check for cold laser treatment centers in your area.

5. Avoid cold beverages and food. Avoid ingesting iced beverages and foods straight from the refrigerator. The greatest sea of lymphatic tissue is in the digestive system. The body functions best at a temperature of 98.6 degrees. Healthy lymph feels like oily water and is pumped throughout the body primarily by the skeletal muscles. It needs this warm environment to remain in a healthy fluid-like state. When you eat or drink cold foods and liquids, it stuns the lymph system causing the oily water lymph to congeal into a more jello-like consistency impeding its free flowing movement throughout the body.

6. Release toxins through massage. Lymphatic drainage massage specifically targets the lymph system. It aids in breaking up congestion within the lymph system, tones and supports the lymph nodes as well as facilitates the fluid’s movement throughout the body. Massage works directly on the entire digestive system and is a powerful technique for lymphatic care. You can learn techniques such as Chi Nei Tsang, which is designed to be self-administered. Once you learn how to do it, you have a lifetime of free treatments. A deep-tissue massage is also effective in the release of stored toxins.

Vaishali learned to transform her life after she had two terminal disease diagnoses.

After surviving thyroid cancer, Reiki revealed a deeper dimension to my life

ANONYMOUS — Throughout my life, I’ve received many messages from the Spirit World and, as a child, had a spontaneous out-of-body experience. But there is one specific spiritual event in my adulthood that has profoundly changed my life.

Many years ago, I had cancer, which started in my thyroid and quickly spread to my esophagus and vocal cords. I had two surgeries and nine months of radiation, followed by another year of recovery for me to regain my full strength.

To this day, I have a scar across my throat that looks like a smile. But I have grown to love that scar because, to me, it represents life.

Heal thyself? Sometimes you need help

Prior to my first surgery, my friend Lesley, a certified Reiki master from England, offered to give me a session. As she played a calming, New Age recording , I lay flat on my living room floor, barefoot, in shorts and a T-shirt. A Reiki session usually begins with hands-on contact, either on one’s shoulders or head, to make an energy connection. The rest is mostly hands-off, to move and balance the chi (ki) energy.

Every time Lesley touched my temples to begin our healing session, I giggled. We’d stop and try again. This happened numerous times to the point where Lesley and I were laughing so hard that we both had tears streaming down our cheeks. I couldn’t control myself. I didn’t know if it was nervous energy, but I kept laughing my fool head off, making Lesley laugh as well. We decided to try one final time. If I giggled again, we’d have to end the session, as it obviously wasn’t going to work out.

I closed my eyes and settled into a relaxed state, as Lesley put her hands on my head. At that moment, in my mind’s eye, I saw a girl get struck by a car. I could see her little body laying on the road where she died instantly. She was an adorable blond-haired, blue-eyed, five-year-old wearing a summer dress. I did not recognize her from any time or place in my life.

Or should I say, “this life?”

The shock immediately stopped me from giggling and took me on the journey I needed to take. . .

The mystery of the “child spirit”

I left my body in Vancouver, and my soul traveled 3,000 miles to my hometown in Southern Ontario. I saw the little girl’s parents standing on the sidewalk holding each other and crying. Behind them, I could see one of the houses my family had lived in when I was growing up. It was a house of desolation, drinking, depression, divorce, and death — a place that holds few good memories for me; a place I’d rather forget. I don’t know if the little girl had lived in that house, or if she just died in front of it, but my connection to this little child spirit was undeniably that house on London Street.

The next thing I knew, the little girl took me by the hand and began walking me through different stages of my life. She took me to a red brick house in the neighborhood where I could see the silhouette of a man in a window with bars on it. I knew the little girl was showing me that nobody else was being hurt by that troubled man.

Then, we were back in Vancouver. I could see myself laying on my living room floor with Lesley doing energy work around my body. The little girl took my hand again and we went to the beach, which is one of my favorite places. I saw us doing cartwheels down the street and could feel my ponytail brushing against the sidewalk.

We walked barefoot in the sand to the Pacific Ocean shoreline. I walked into the ocean with the little girl beside me. As we did, I noticed that she was walking on the water. There were surface splashes from her little feet while I was knee-deep in the sea.

Every once in a while, I would see flashes of Lesley with me back in my apartment. I think that was my “silver umbilical cord” preventing my soul from straying too far away from my body.

Back at the beach, the little girl and I sat on a driftwood log. I felt such peace. Time stood still. But suddenly, the little girl started to cry. Not the ethereal tears of a child spirit, but the real tears of an earth child. Yet, through her tears I sensed a strength and wisdom beyond her years. And I felt a deep connection with her.

My heart ached. I asked her, “Why are you crying? What’s wrong?”

She simply said, “I can’t play with you anymore. I have to go now.” We looked at each other, and then I knew.

I said, “I’m going to get well, aren’t I?” The little girl nodded “yes,” and then disappeared.

When I returned to my body on the living room floor and Lesley finished my session, she said to me with fascination, “Where did you go? I felt you leave. You were so far away!”

I told Lesley the story, which moved us both to tears. At the same time, we were elated by this beautiful gift we had just shared.

I spent years trying to understand who this little girl was and why she came to me.

About five or six years ago, I was in my bathroom getting ready for work. When I’m doing anything routine or ritualistic, like dishes, showering, housework, that’s usually when I receive messages from Spirit.

A spirit guide reveals the mystery

As clear as a sweet angel’s voice, I could hear my spirit guide, Tanerra, say to me, “You’ve been asking who that little girl is. You want to know who she is, don’t you?”

I telepathically responded, “yes.”

Tanerra then told me that the little girl, the child spirit, is named Cindy. She will come to me whenever I’m in danger, seriously ill, or dying. Cindy’s role in my life is to escort me to the Other Side when it’s my time to return to the spirit world.

I felt tremendous serenity. . . but I hope it will be many years before I see Cindy again.

A reiki master in her late 30′s describes how she used the body-work technique to help conceive her first child

BY DANA L. YOUNG — Can practicing reiki help you if your goal is to become a mother? I had already been practicing reiki when I became pregnant in 2006. I’m in my late 30’s and had anticipated a long wait while trying to conceive. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was expecting after only two months!

I instinctively knew that reiki had helped me — and as a reiki practitioner, I have seen it help clients of mine conceive after trying fertility treatments without success.

Reiki clears blockages in our human energy field that cause imbalances in the way our body operates.

What is reiki? It’s a form of healing energy using light touch along the energy centers (chakras) in the body that helps induce deep relaxation, put your internal ‘feng shui’ in order, and promote a peak state of well-being.

Reiki is a form of bodywork that is especially beneficial for expectant and new mothers because it helps prepare women for the physical, emotional and spiritual changes necessary for a “centered” conception, pregnancy, labor and post-partum recovery experience.

Our chakras are concentrated energy centers in our bodies, and are considered the energetic hubs or nexi for the roles played by our major and minor organs. If your physical functioning is compromised due to injury, inflammation, or disease, your physical capacity is diminished. Similarly, if your energy centers are blocked, your body will manifest the blockage as a physical or emotional symptom like addiction.

Our reproductive systems, in particular, are very susceptible to the effects of stress, anxiety or changes in our hormone and endocrine levels.

There are a number of women who functionally can support a pregnancy, but still have difficulty conceiving. Reiki is supportive and helps prepare the body for conception on all levels. It can be safely used in conjunction with charting, IVF, IUI, and other methods.

For relieving the physical discomforts of pregnancy like morning sickness, reiki is especially useful. The hormones associated with pregnancy – human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen — contributes to gastric distress. Reiki’s inductive powers can help reduce the sensation of nausea, and provide soothing relief from ligament pain, as well as the back and hip pain typically experienced as pregnancy progresses.

I was one fortunate enough to feel my baby kicking already in the early states of my pregnancy — a rare thing to experience at week 15 or 16. However, because of that I also experienced regular — and often intense — Braxton-Hicks contractions.

One night in particular, I recall having a lot of contractions and both the baby and I were very agitated. It finally occurred to me to channel Reiki to myself. I placed one hand on my upper abdomen, where the solar plexus chakra is located, and the other over my womb in order to connect with my baby. Reiki’s soothing energy encourages the parasympathetic “rest and digest” response in the abdominal cavity where the solar plexus is located, calming the nerves and relaxing the body. Soon enough, the Braxton-Hicks stopped, the baby settled down and I was able to fall into a relaxing sleep.

Pregnancy is exciting and stressful for expectant mothers, but our culture generally does not often do a good job of supporting women during this time. Many women are juggling demands associated with careers, expectations from their families, changes in their relationships with their partners — and of course, in their bodies.

These factors can exacerbate fatigue, discomfort and mood swings. Reiki also helps expectant mothers to reduce stress and remain more grounded emotionally. A Reiki treatment is, first and foremost, time to honor yourself and your body during a time when you may no longer feel like it belongs to you. Reiki sessions can be so deeply relaxing that clients can often drift off into asleep — and as any pregnant woman knows, sleep is a valuable commodity!

Reiki is also especially helpful for post-partum recovery. Women’s bodies undergo tremendous change to support the new life growing inside them; it takes a while for the body’s organs and processes to return to a normal pre-pregnancy state. Even if you had a relatively easy labor and birth experience and aren’t feeling discomfort, there is still a lot of healing going on inside your body after your baby is born.

I had an emergency C-section, but was fortunate to receive reiki treatments from both my teacher and close friend while I was recovering. They helped me get strong and centered so that I could fully embrace motherhood and my beautiful little girl.

One of the things I valued so much about being a reiki practitioner during my pregnancy was the depth of connection I felt with my baby during that time. Consequently, I think that early connection also helped me become more attuned to her needs.

My daughter received reiki in utero often enough that, even now, there have been times where she seems to naturally draw the energy when she’s in my arms without me even having to actively channel it.

Maybe on some level, I intuit that she needs it and reiki just flows to her. I don’t think you have to be a reiki practitioner to experience that heightened awareness. My clients who receive reiki on a regular basis have developed deeper intuition and understanding about the relationship between their bodies and their energy fields, which help connect them more deeply to others and to Spirit.

Reiki honors the women we are: our bodies, our emotions and the spirit within that gives us strength and purpose. A good article that describing how reiki has been used in a clinical setting during pregnancy and to facilitate healing during post-partum is “Reiki and the Birth Experience.”

Once a clueless novice, a writer shares how she learned to stop worrying — and was inspired to become certified as a Reiki master. If you have ever had children . . .

BY MARLENE SATTER — Anyone who’s ever sat in a doctor’s office and steamed, waiting sometimes for hours to be seen — only to be given the bum’s rush once inside the doctor’s office — ought to consider Reiki as a self-help technique for your mind-body toolkit.

Also, if you have ever had children or animals, and have ever felt helpless when they were ill or hurt, think of Reiki as something you can add to your home’s First Aid kit, while you wait for medical help (or simply lessen the side-effects of allopathic treatments). Sometimes you might find that Reiki is all that was needed!

In 2002, I discovered the power of Reiki first-hand (pun unavoidable

It started with an ad in our local paper in Monmouth County that offered a one-day workshop on Reiki for animals. I had no idea what that meant, but I had a very dear elderly little dog with a heart murmur.

While I had an excellent alternative-medicine vet who did everything from chiropractic to homeopathic treatment, I wanted to do something more for my little companion, who had given me so much in love and devotion throughout her life.

So I signed up. It turned out that this innocent little course would take me into areas of self-contemplation and healing that I’d never dreamed of. That very first day of training I knew that I wanted to become a Reiki Master – although I’d never even heard of such a thing ’til the class began.

What is Reiki? (pronounced ray-key) It’s an ancient healing art that re-aligns an individual’s lifeforce, or ki — the Japanese equivalent of Chinese chi — as in, Tai Chi or ch’i kung (known in five-star American spas as qigong ) Rei is the word for spirit in Japanese.

So Reiki, using therapeutic touch (or not), focuses energy for healing purposes. What energy? Well, if the physical plant of our consciousness is the electromagnetic circuitry of our synapses, call it the energy that animates these minds and bodies we inhabit. Call it a Higher Power, or the “force” . . . Call it whatever you want. The point is, it works!

The “Reiki state” moves that energy through the practitioner (not from the practitioner — an important distinction) and into the person seeking healing. That’s you. Or me. Or anyone.

The dirty little secret is that we, the recipients, do the actual healing. The person seeking healing is the one who unlocks the flood of dammed-up energy to mend what’s wrong.

Yet you don’t have to do all of that work when you’re on the Reiki table. Most people experience the “Reiki state” as an induction that ranges between borderline sleep to a deep trance in which they may see colors or visions, be aware of other presences, or gain insights into their lives and problems.

The other beauty of Reiki is that there’s no manipulation. Practitioners do lay their hands on the body in various places, but straight Reiki has no talk, does not involve massage or any other kind of turning of mind-body screws.

In fact, the practitioner doesn’t have to touch you at all if you’re not comfortable with it. The recipient is fully clothed and can totally relax.

When I start a session, I might cue the patient with suggestions for healing a specific issue — a body part, like a pulled muscle or a lingering cough, or a more mental or spiritual problem like an ongoing dispute with a family member or doubts over one’s path in life. But then I make a shift, and go to a place of acting as a channel for the energy to flow where it’s needed.

I’ve done Reiki on a cancer patient who’d felt residual burning from radiation treatment, and the Reiki brought soothing coolness rather than heat. If you go to a Reiki practitioner, it’s important to drink lots of water in the 24-48 hours after a treatment, as it will help clear out all the toxins that Reiki will trigger your body to release. You may not notice any change immediately. But the next day, or the day after, you can suddenly be aware that something profound has shifted in your energy anatomy and well-being.

Once you’ve experienced Reiki for yourself, you may want to study it long enough to become attuned to administer Reiki to yourself and others. This will allow you to maintain your own healing, as well as to give your mate, your children, or your pets some comfort and healing during illness or while recovering from injury. It can be an extraordinary healing tool, and can lead you to learn about additional alternatives to the “accepted” way of doing things that may fit much better with your needs and life.

Personally, I’ve used Reiki on myself to: pass kidney stones and prevent a recurrence; get rid of migraines; heal a broken toe; relieve the pain of a tension-racked neck; and even make colds go away faster or head them off altogether.

It’s opened up a lot of other doors: I’ve found myself pursuing new career paths, studying more advanced alternative treatment methods (Imagine if Tony Soprano had the benefit of harp music at his bedside while in his Season Six coma in the hospital), and achieving goals that had languished for years (among them, the publication of two books.)

As for my beloved little dog? Reiki helped her through several geriatric problems, and she went peacefully to the Rainbow Bridge at home, at the remarkable age of 17.

Marlene Satter is a certified Reiki Master. She also writes about personal finance, the environment and animals.
