“Less” is the new more

Whether it’s software or workaholism, LESS is a competitive advantage

SOUL’S CODE — Work, of course, is more than just a way to make a living. It’s one of the most spiritual things we do, whether it’s meditatively mopping the floors, caring for the sick, or… well, you get the point. Which is why discussions of how we work can be about so much more than work. Just consider software developer Jason Fried’s 2005 rant about the power of simplicity..

The truth is this: There are a million simple problems that need to be solved before you should even consider trying to solve the complex ones. Less software solves simpler problems. Let your competitors kill themselves trying to solve the big complex problems. Solving those problems are really hard, really expensive, and riddled with bad odds. Stay simple, build simple, and solve simple.

    Business Objects has been shouting about this for years. Apple really made it work though. The iPod is all about less. It’s not a phone. It doesn’t take pictures. It does one thing and does it well.

    Wouldn’t it be great if we could focus on one thing at a time and perfect our skills at it. Approach it spiritually and pursue clarity of mind through execution?
