Tony Samara’s code for a daily spiritual dose: selfless service and treating your body as a temple

tony samaraTony Samara, founder of the eponymous, non-profit organization, The Samara Foundation for the Evolution of Human Consciousness, lived for several years in a Zen Buddhist monastery.

After leaving the monastery, Tony traveled to the jungles of the Amazon and the Andes, where he lived and studied among a community of shamans.

Soul’s Code: What secrets did you learn from the healers and holy men?

Tony: I worked with many shamans in the jungles and mountains of South America. It is difficult to put into words all the learnings, but one could summarize the essence as being a profound respect for nature and its inherent cycles that help sustain life. That humans can utilize nature to enhance their joy, gives this realm meaning.

Soul’s Code: Do you still interact or visit the shamans and medicine men?

Tony: Not in this dimension, as I do not like long distance travel. But there are easier ways of staying in communication.

Soul’s Code: What are the actual practices and techniques that you teach in the West?

Tony: In my work, the physical body is seen as the temple, and this temple should be glowing with light, yet we often forget about our body until we get sick. Therefore, cleansing retreats form an intrinsic part of this spiritual path.

Morning and afternoon talks/satsangs are offered, interspersed with energy exercises, dream work, gentle exercises, visualizations, strong meditation practices (such as the whirling meditation), breathing exercises and group exercises drawn from my experience with ancient Shamanic, Oriental and Zen Buddhist traditions.  They are very powerful detoxification programmes due to the inclusion of herbal detox preparations, liquid superfoods and other special herbal preparations. Theriaca, my healing elixir is also part of the detox programme.

There is always some free time for walks in nature, and writing in journals.

Soul’s Code: Does the food we eat govern our level of consciousness?

Tony: The subject of nutrition is not simply a question of the food we eat at meals. Besides nutrients, foods contain scents, colors and invisible particles that attract pure light, light that is so essential for our joyful life and well-being.

The difference between flesh-based and vegetarian foods lies in the amount of sunlight they contain. Fruits and vegetables are so steeped in sunlight, that one could say they are a condensed form of light. In order to develop the qualities of the heart, besides eating peacefully, one needs to eat consciously. This means bringing in the light, eating the concentrated light which contains the beautiful sounds that connect our hearts to the rhythms and invisible aspects of the Universe. This attracts the luminous properties of matter and illuminates your being, especially your thoughts and emotions, not just today, but throughout your experience of your existence on this material plane.

garden of edenYour future depends on how you eat and what you eat. Your body is your temple — and every action within the temple, done with conscious intention — creates a more harmonious outcome.

The quality of your food, its physical properties, not only transforms your emotions and mind, but can actually change your appearance and personality. Everything around us is permeated by forces and those forces become more pure and subtle the further they reach the higher planes of light that exist here in the physical world.

I see the physical body as the “temple of the soul”, and as part of each person’s process, I suggest one follows a healthy and balanced vegetarian diet. Such a diet would exclude meat, fish, poultry, eggs and refined foods such as white sugar, white flour, deep frozen and/or processed foods.

In this way, the focus would be rather on fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season and/or are organically produced. This is a way to connect to Nature and its rhythms and cycles so that one may be in harmony with it. I see Nature as an omnipresent guide and a reference to how human beings can live harmoniously on the planet.

Soul’s Code: Is the goal of your foundation to sell products and retreats?

Tony: The Samara Foundation was set up to help realize the evolution of human consciousness worldwide, using the guidelines of my teachings.  We embrace the goal of working towards self-realization and liberation. As we move beyond the simple satisfaction of personal needs and become something greater, in order to create a reality in harmony with our spiritual aspirations, we take responsibility for our processes, raise our consciousness and find the love and the light in each situation.

Soul’s Code: How do acts of “selfless service” free us from financial hardship, anxiety, depression or illness?

Tony: My path is dedicated to making people independent and self-sufficient. By everyone taking initiative, free of ego and its judgements, then we have creative action. With this action we discover that within our self-sufficiency we have the ability to love the differences and the uniqueness in each other.

When one speaks of self-sufficiency this means taking a mature attitude towards life. Whatever choices one makes, life reflects it. There is no running away from all the responsibilities that we face in life. Looking for ways of simplifying and easing things for ourselves creates selfishness. By instead creating joy for everybody it is possible to build a joyful selfless service to humanity. This can be put into practice in all situations in this very moment where we bypass selfish instincts, ideas and expectations and live according to higher ideals that in the end help us to move beyond selfishness and realize what selfless service is all about. This is the joy of simply being.

There is nothing more than love, and selfless service is an ‘express track’ to realizing that love is not limited to desires, needs or lacks, but rather an overflowing sense of giving.  The more people who put this into practice, the more the world will be able to actualize love — and thereby create a new paradigm for all of us to live by.

  1. what a wonderful interview. thank you tony and thank you soulscode team. love, wahido

  2. I met Tony Samara in 2001 just when my spiritual awakening started happening. That was when I asked him to start working with me. It was one of the most important things that happened in my life, if not the most significant. But at that time nothing would tell the great, enthusiastic, lightful, perfect and wonderful path towards the discovery of the inner self, step by step into the moment. A voyage into myself started and still goes on, through ups and downs, through dreams that came true and others that were dropped, meeting all sorts of people from all walks of life, simply having the deepest experience of my life.

My inner wisdom tells me now that this is possible when the true trust in one’s heart to the work of the Master exists. The Master, the Friend, the Love Affair that every day and every moment unveils the true work that lies behind the mundane, the material, the mind and the body. My experience is unique to myself and each one has a different one. But when Love becomes the centre of the path we all share the wisdom of Tony’s teachings, the Path of Love.

My invitation and dream is that you also have the freedom to jump as high as you can into Tony’s work, thus into your deepest self. In my opinion this is not an easy path nor makes us always happy and fulfilled and glowing with light, instead enables us to drop the masks and layers upon layers that hide the Truth of our hearts. I’m sure that Tony’s teachings will be experienced by everyone that truly seeks that something that cannot be told by words or concepts.

I believe that in silence and stillness every door of our true nature opens to our experience of the moment, to the unity and oneness where we all came from. I trust that in that moment real freedom happens and our experience becomes one of joy and happiness, selfless and effortless work. This and more were the things that I learned from being with Tony Samara. Thank You Tony for Being. Love, Wahido

  3. I came across Tony Samara and his teachings while looking at some videos on Shamanism on UTube. I was instantly attracted to his simple, matter of fact, but kind manner and his teachings. I have participated in Shamanic journeys and practice regular meditation, so Tony’s teachings resonated with me and I felt I could learn a lot from this teacher.
Thank you Soul’s Code for featuring him and his beliefs and letting us learn more about him and where his teachings originated..

  4. I have been living in a communal atmosphere for the past several months.

There are loving souls here that truly care about one another. There are daily challenges mostly due to the history of the individual life experiences that have been brought forward into the invironment inevetibly.

I have been working with particular personal aspects of sharing the positive blessings of awakening the concept of soul realization and applying the theory of the child within becoming the responsible adult so that one can aspire to become all one can be in the precious moment with LOVE.

This is the challenge in our little community. We have young, and old. We have some homosexuality and mature adult female victims that have not grasped the adult within. Their are financial stresses and of course the lack of God-Self awareness.

My friend sent this information to me. As I have read this post I believe that Tonys’ philosophy could really help the dimensions that exist here in our small community. Love starts the healing of the self when It is shared.

Looking forward to more discovery through this enlightend contact.

  5. I believe that what Tony Samara has to offer is far beyond anything Carlos Castañeda could have done so the title of this article may be an interesting thing to comment on. If we understand shamanism as anthropological concept trying to box and grasp what is essential to freedom then we also realise that living in harmony with Nature is simply… living in harmony with Nature.

This requires no labels or special magic nor techniques or witchcraft. One’s energy naturally rises and comes into contact with other dimension of existence as we free ourselves from the layers of the personal and impersonal ego and Tony Samara guides whoever is on this path towards finding the inner being and happiness that is common to everything in the Universe. How does he do this? I don’t have the definitive answer because to conceptualise this in a mental frame is so infinitely complex that anyone would go mad. I only know what I have experienced through my journey with him, and the simple answer is Love. Not the emotion but the deep trust and commitment to the intention of being free.

    Thanks for this interview!

  6. No words nor all the words of the world could ever describe who Tony is, nor what exactly he does. He must be experienced and yet, the only one I got to know better during my time with him, is me. He has been a guide to me, besides being a clever trickster and a loving friend. He showed me places I never knew existed and other places I never wanted to know existed. Guiding me patiently…very patiently along my path like a beacon of light. Lighting up the way, allowing me to stop and look at the sticks and stones and the nitty-gritty. Always there as a loving presence, whether I experience ecstatic moments of joy or destructive moments of doubt and frustration. For that same reason, I have loved and hated him, for the sheer fact of loving me for who I am at any given time in life. Giving me the space to remember. In such moments of clarity, deep trust arises and I see his devotion and unconditional love…and that is when I recognise and thank him for being who he is and helping me to be who I am.
