monster mask large Monster Study Kids CompensatedMore than 80 years after scientists harrassed orphans in an experiment to make them stutter, the great State of Iowa paid out $925,000 to each child who had been subjected to what is now known as, The Monster Study.

So much for the Hippocratic oath’s ethic of “do no harm.” The study was kept quiet for years after WWII for fear it would be linked to Nazi experiments.

Stuttering sometimes takes decades to overcome. But, of course, it doesn’t kill the people who suffer from it. That’s for other studies. It’s a classic deontological vs. utilitarianism argument—where do you stand?

    the same argument is make for using animals for experiments. “for the greater good.” but who decides what that is…before you know it, it’s nazi germany all over again…or dafur or rawanda..
