Instead of *nine* spiritual resorts on the West Coast, we now have a new Top 10 list — and extend our geography way down the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Before, our north pole of mystical destinations was the Wickaninnish Inn on Vancouver Island — and the south, The Chopra Center near San Diego.

We add the Present Moment Retreat, a half-hour north of Zihuatanejo, and for our research interviewed founder, Tom Morisette.

Present Moment Retreat, Troncones Beach, Mexico: We don’t know of any other property on Mexico’s Pacific Coast that features five-star spa facilities, beach-side Vinayasa and Ashtanga yoga workshops, Qigong instruction, craniosacral massage — and unabashedly advertises itself as a ’spiritual retreat’. Present Moment is on an unspoiled stretch of coastline about 30 minutes north of Zihuatanejo, and light years in attitude away from the corporate-run, mega-hotels that wall tourist-traps like Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. it is the creation of a Minneapolis artist and designer named Tom Morisette: he broke ground on the visionary complex in 2003, while many other white-collar Americans were wringing their hands about the ‘jobless recovery.’ Abiding by green principles, it took him two years to build.

Cost: $1,300 per person for an ocean-view bungalow for a week; $115 per night.

That’s far less than some of us paid to stay in the blah beach-side Sheraton Buganvilias in Puerto Vallarta for five days four months ago So we think the Present Moment is a deal!
